  • June is National Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Awareness Month, dedicated to educating the public about the most common infectious cause of birth defects in the US. Established in 2011, this observance highlights that 1 in 5 babies with congenital CMV develops long-term health issues, such as hearing loss.
  • What is CMV: A common virus, with over 50% of adults infected by age 40, usually causing no symptoms in healthy people.
  • Congenital CMV Risk: When a pregnant person contracts the virus, they can pass it to the fetus. It is a leading cause of hearing loss, vision loss, and developmental delays in newborns.
  • Why June Matters: Only 9% of women are aware of CMV, despite it being a major cause of birth defects. Awareness aims to promote prevention strategies.
  • Prevention Strategies: Pregnant people should avoid contact with saliva/urine from young children (e.g., not sharing food, kissing on the mouth) and wash hands frequently
